As we near the end of the year I got to thinking about the rituals we usually all indulge in: from taking stock of our lives, to choosing a “word” to define the year ahead or making New Years Resolutions we are certain, even as we are making them, that we won’t keep – if only because a resolution so often tells us to restrict something instead of adding something joyful to our lives!
I, for one have been resolving to lose weight, get organised and change my entire personality for as long as I can remember and truth be known I still wear giant knickers, muddle through life in a bubble of my own making and couldn’t become someone else if I tried. Resolutions, I have decided, just don’t work… and more than that, at the grand old age of 47, I want to start accepting that I am what I am – that though I can continue to establish the routines and rituals that will save me from having to be hoisted out through the windows should I ever get in a calamity, hormones, thyroids and general ludicrousness might just always be standing in-between me and my own idea of perfection.
Far better then, to look not at what we can take away from our lives in order to reach betterment, but instead to throw ourselves heart and soul into identifying what makes us truly happy, and then set about creating a life whereby we are mindful about throwing little joys at ourselves by the lorry-load throughout the year ahead.
And so The Bliss Book was born. And as is so often the case here on BrocanteHome, what I created for me, I want to share with you. Together I want us to identify the myriad of moments of bliss we are so endlessly denying ourselves, because we are busy being busy, or good, or controlling, or demented. Moments of bliss in twelve areas of our lives where we are more likely to be tunnelling through than waltzing our way towards joy.
For me, with The Bliss Book at hand, I will be creating a day of calm somewhere between Christmas and New Year to tune my (ever so sensible) head out long enough to hear my hearts desires. To identify all that I was once certain I loved, but now seem to have forgotten in the midst of the terribly dull business of being a proper grown-up.
I will be looking at those things that soothe me, the sanctuary of home, places and people I need to make time for, the puttery treats and food I have forgotten I adore, the music and well-being rituals I should be enjoying, the family and relationship joys I have set aside to mop the floor until its lickable, and the books and self-care routines I could really benefit from if only I reminded myself how blissful they feel.
Yes. I’m looking for bliss. For perfect moments of deeply personal happiness and the kind of little joys that will sustain me in 2020. Twelve lists of lovely little somethings I can sit down with my planner or calendar and CHOOSE to make happen. For from bliss comes the kind of motivation we can never find in deprivation or even resolution…
I have printed out my Bliss Book and added it to my Life Book ready to go, and it is my intention to make this an annual ritual: to remind myself who I am, what it is I love and how I can make myself feel valued in the year ahead. Hopefully Santa will provide me with a few treats to enjoy in the bliss of candlelit solitude as I work through the Bliss Book, and when the day is done I hope to have in my hands an honest look at all that I have been denying myself, and the determination to make sure that in each and every day of the year ahead there is a moment I can describe as my own kind of bliss.
Won’t you do the same?
