Oh yay oh yay oh yay – September is here! And as you will know if you have read my new About Page, (and scrolled your way past the gallery of yours truly) September has my heart and refuses to loosen her grip on it sufficient enough for me to throw myself into the other eleven months of the year with quite the same passion as that I reserve for the bliss of the back to schools…
For yes, my beautiful boy turned sixteen on Monday and today I had a little tear in my eye as I realised this would be the last of his “first days back at school”, before he starts college next year. Something I can barely fathom, for it seems just yesterday that his Dad and I walked behind him as he worried his way into reception class, eleven years ago, and the rigours of the school time table began to dictate our days and swallow up the years so fast that he is now heading to six foot and sporting a moustache he is too lazy to shave, and muttering, when I remark upon it, that he is considering a beard.
A beard!! Babies can’t have beards!!
Anyways I digress. I am here to wave goodbye to my torrid Summer, and welcome you back to BrocanteHome, for another year. For this is always our New Year here: a time to focus all over again on the routines and rituals that shore us against domestic ruin, and to give our online home a bit of a spruce so we can once again work up the enthusiasm to wholeheartedly throw ourselves into a season of revival, renewal and all the delicious preparations for Autumn, Christmas and of course, the cosiest hibernation we can muster up, come the depths of Winter.
So yes, I am back and I bring with me a litany of lovely change. Though I may not have been here much over the Summer I have actually been quietly beavering away behind the scenes and I just wanted to return today, and show you around, share the details of what’s coming on BrocanteHome over the next few months and hopefully awaken your domestic spirit all over again. For to me this feels like the most auspicious of Autumns, as Sarah Ban Breathnach is about to publish a truly scrumptiously revamped 25th anniversary edition of Simple Abundance, that marks in my own mind the celebration of a way of life I am so truly grateful to Sarah for inspiring. For without her there would be no Brocantehome and I feel so very ready to hear her unique voice talking us all through the enormous changes we have all seen in the past 25 years: changes that have both empowered us and threatened the very concept of simplicity…
As I suggested a few weeks ago when I created our new Manifesto: I want to try to get back to the very roots of the BrocanteHome we all know and love: to create a site and membership that is in itself a domestic eco-system – the sum of its parts – a blog, my books and my VIP programme – greater than its whole, so that day by day I talk you through all the routines, rituals and celebrations that spell a life less ordinary, in all aspects of my work.
So it begins with the Calendar. Once the reserve of my Salon members, I have brought it over here so that we can all benefit from the rhythm of a seasonal life and create for ourselves a calendar full of gentle reminders that routine really does help to soothe the chaos domesticity and family life can so easily bring.
Freshly designed and now infinitely more user-friendly, (bye-bye horrible pop-ups!) I am in the process of slowly adding all the long established routines we know and love and over time will add those we have been creating together in the Life-Book. Where once you had to add the entire calendar to your Google or Apple calendar, now you can pick and choose which of the individual routines work for you and shuffle them around in your own calendar to suit the rhythm of your own life. Yay!
Eventually you will also find direct links to the printables in the VIP Life-Book accompanying each daily, weekly or seasonal event so you can simply hop from one aspect of life the Brocante way to its associated planner page and really start implementing routine in a coherent and meaningful manner. So on Shopping Day you can hop straight into the planner and download my scrumptiously pretty VIP Shopping List (which includes a mini weekly meal-planner and space for listing everything from pantry ingredients to puttery treats!) and plan accordingly.
This then will become the beating heart of BrocanteHome: a simple system you can use to organise everything from keeping an eye on your weight to blitzing and prettifying the house I will use to define all that we do in my posts and our Life-Book.
Arriving next week (TRIPLE YAY!!!), the Playbook is the first time I have ever created anything in magazine format and it has been an absolute delight to create! Honestly I have been in my absolute element creating it so I am so excited to share it with you, but in line with my decision not to offer pre-sales until the Playbook is actually ready, it won’t be going on sale until I am able to pop it into your inbox, though you will of course be able to get it FREE as part of your VIP or Salon membership if you are already signed up. Watch this space for the launch date…
After dallying with Shopify on and off over the past few years, I have finally settled on creating the shop right here on the site, in line with my promise to bring as much of my Brocante scrumptiousness back to one place and so I will be adding new products to the shop soon (including some lovely new Brocante Merchandise!), selling each of the pages from my Life-Book individually so you can be a part of the fun without commitment and adding picks to my (gorgeous) monthly edit as we go along…
So that’s what’s new. But I want you to know that what is already here isn’t going away either: there is much to be completed in The Salon and I am looking forward to getting back to good old-fashioned blogging too. I know the re-think of BrocanteHome has been a long time coming, but I want you to know that your input really has shaped the way I am taking it forward and I hope it will be as inspirational as it always has been in the coming months. I feel refreshed and excited by the simplicity of my plan and grateful for the breathing space Summer has given me so I hope that when the Playbook is finally delivered to you you will see how utterly dedicated I remain to creating something truly scrumptious.
Happy September Darlings!
