Nice to Meet You, I'm Alison May

Vintage Housekeeper

Mum,  Step-Mum and Lady Boss

PeriMenopausal MAdwoman

Perpetually Dis-organised Blogger

I’m so glad you are here. In the fifteen years (FIFTEEN YEARS!!) I have been blogging at BrocanteHome so much has changed in my life and I have captured it all here in posts long and short, funny, inspiring and occasionally heartbreaking. For I am a woman just like you, telling the truth about my life and hoping that in an all my ups and downs you will find sanctuary, solace and sometime a deep sigh (and suppressed giggle) of “there but for the grace of God!”

Truth among bloggers is so very rare in these Instagrammed days and though of course I want you to dip in and out of BrocanteHome for the homemaking writing I have become known for, I also want you to feel like you have found a friend. The kind you could pop in and see for tea and lavender shortbread when the word seems to be standing on its head. The kind who will make you snort with laughter when the tears are tripping you…

So who am I? I am Mum to Finley who is almost sixteen and step-Mum to Stevie who is thirteen, partner to Ste, former interior designer, lover of sherbet dip-dabs, Agatha Raisin fan, possessor of an oversized bottom and homemaking obsessive.

I am 47, have never been married, have two broken engagements to my name,  (including a near miss with a very bad man indeed), never quite managed to get the hang of money, sold my beautiful little cottage in a fit of madness shortly after watching my lovely Mum die so very unexpectedly at the age of sixty-four, and now cannot quite fathom how we will ever make it back on to the property ladder!

I like books and cheese and new cushions. lavender, cucumber and September (oh how I love you September!). New magazines, black and white films, vintage paintings of women I have never met, car boot sales and staying at home when I am supposed to be attending this, that or the sociable other. I am in fact deeply unsociable, permanently exhausted thanks to the misery of Hashimoto’s and prone to singing at the top of my voice when you least expect it…

An ordinary woman living a muddly life I have carved from extra-ordinary dreams. With hair, rather outrageously growing out of my chin, a penchant for jaunts around the library and a head full of polka-dotty candy-floss.
