Well heavens, one minute I was there and the next the slings and arrows of family life, illness, and a sudden urge to get the backend of BrocanteHome in order after so many of you were kind enough to join The Salon before the big change on the 9th of January, stole me away from you.
But here I am again, turning up all over again like a flower-sprinkled bad penny, ready and willing to share my very detailed plans for a site less ordinary. So get yourself cozy, because this is going to be a long, twisty, wonderful journey into what I want BrocanteHome to be as I enter my fifteenth year online…
Once Upon A Time…
In the beginning, BrocanteHome was about the “little bits of nothing” that made up my life with a little babba and a teeny, old cottage. It was in the world before Pinterest and Instagram: when every blog post was neither a tutorial nor a collection of random images nicked from around the web, and our attention wasn’t constantly captured by the manicured images of other people’s house’s we are now so used to hearting ♥. Back then I was the first blogger to write about housekeeping, to share the trials and tribulations of keeping house, and to slowly but surely (with far too many ups and downs for any person to manage and keep her sanity intact!) build a small, dedicated community I so very much treasure today.
But as the years went by, I grew up and you did too. Most of us now know the HOW’s of housekeeping, but we still need help with the when’s and sometimes even, the why’s. We have come to understand that a happy home is about so much more than the right quantities of baking soda and aromatherapy oils in our homemade cleaners and that should we need that kind of advice, Pinterest is now a veritable encyclopedia of remedies and recipes we can access twenty-four hours a day.
Home still means exactly what it did to us early Brocanteer’s, it is still so very much entwined with our souls, but I think that where once I thought that home created the soul, I now see that it is the soul that creates the home and it is the soul that needs feeding, soothing and stimulating so that who we are is reflected in how we keep house and indeed the sense of home we inspire in those we live with.
So moving forward I want to start with us. And from a better sense of ourselves, create sanctuaries that support our journey towards a life less ordinary. I want to acknowledge the enormous impact the changing shape of family life has on home, the way the strength of our relationships contributes to the energy in our houses and how very much they create or crush any sense of harmony. I want us to redefine home as a place of education and good health. Where the domestic patterns of our day and the routines and rituals we create, encourage and support personal and spiritual growth, help us create spaces that are in alignment with our souls and with the eradication of the clutter hindering so many of us, give us room to breathe and sanctuary from an outside world becoming madder by the day.
Those of you who have read The Salon Workshop or taken a course of weekly Pep-Talks with me, know that this is work I have already begun this year. That in among the Puttery treats I am sharing in The Puttery Treats Club (for puttery Treats will ALWAYS be a part of Brocantehome for they are the fairy lights wrapped around our ticklish hearts), and the seasonal guides I created last year, I have been encouraging you to dig deeper: to understand that you will never create organization, routine and ritual if you will not recognize that pain, procrastination and relationship woes are battling with the peace you are so very entitled to. That you will not fix yourself with gin, scatter-cushions or the kind of malaise that sticks you to the sofa and achieves nothing day in, day out, and that above all else acceptance is a much more effective tool than rage against that we cannot change.
So in 2019 I want to unpick your belief that you are failing as a homemaker and instead help you find purpose and create order. I want to go into battle with clutter, emotional, physical and otherwise and encourage you to start the biggest life-edit you have ever undertaken for it is only by stripping away that which we have acquired in our efforts to soothe ourselves that we can confront who we are and what we need and move forward along the road towards a life less ordinary.
Maybe this isn’t for you. Maybe you have not yet reached the stage where you believe that anything other than knowing when to clean the bathroom will help you. That’s ok. There are so very many other resources online to help you these days and I honestly won’t be offended if the direction of my work no longer resonates with you. But I know that there are so very many women who can benefit from unpicking their lives with me at a time when the pattern of their lives has started to un-pick itself. Who with a little direction will come to understand that no amount of floral plates and neat pantry shelves will fill the gaping hole in their tummies, and who thereafter will pick themselves up and take baby-steps towards creating not an OK life, nor one that that is merely anodyne and tolerable, but a life defined by clarity of soul, Joie de Vivre and the sanctuary of home.
What follows then is a breakdown of how I will be sharing these messages across all the content I am planning on creating moving forward.
Here On The Site…
What I Will Be Doing…
The mainstay of the site will be my own Housekeeper’s Diary and I am going to be encouraging you to create a diary of your own as a journal of your life less ordinary journey in 2019. I want to document my life more and I want to share the process of that documentation and how it can help you as together we begin the edit of our lives we will be undertaking in The Salon, staying on track with regular audits of our days and providing inspiration from the amazing homemakers I have asked to share their own journeys in 2019. I will be focusing on sharing more books, articles and resources for your life as a Brocanteer and keeping it simple with a recurring calendar of familiar posts, alongside the usual notices, poetry and whimsical thoughts.
What I Won’t Be Doing…
Often in the past I have started series that haven’t felt right. Been rather random in my offerings and indeed the timing of my offerings and I want that to change so that in the next year my content has a regular, reliable pattern in the same way my Living Room community does: because in this way my work becomes not an ad hoc adjunct to your life but a predictable part of your own routine.
In The Salon.
Up until now, The Salon has been a somewhat muddly hodgepodge of everything that I have created at BrocanteHome beyond the blog. A miscellany of changing ideas, aesthetics, and writing. In its own generous, abundant way, it is lovely and there is so very much to dig into, discover and help you define a life less ordinary of your own. But I have come to understand that more is sometimes less. That what you are looking for from me is both a clear map and necessary signposts along the road to a life less ordinary and so, in my recent silence, that is what I have been creating behind the scenes.
So from January 9th 2019, you will see dramatic changes and much of what currently exists will be gone to make space for the following…
*content titles may be subject to change.*
The Life Less Ordinary Roadmap.
A detailed step by step guide to getting all the pillars of a life filled with routine, ritual, and celebration in place. From establishing routines and committing to diligence and good domestic practice (so you simply don’t have to think about it!), to creating a wellbeing routine you can stick to, establishing reasonable household boundaries and choosing a course of personal and spiritual growth supported by the sanctuary of home.
Supported by videos from yours truly and a detailed printable 2019 planner so you can dig around inside your soul.
The Life Less Ordinary Edit
A week by week guide to editing and refining your own life down to 100 essentials. This doesn’t mean that you can only own one book and one pair of knickers but rather that each week we will look at two items, objects, or ways of being that will contribute to your own sense of self, reduce the clutter in your head and help you too, understand that less is definitely more on the road to seducing your most authentic self.
The Salon Workshop.
Now that the pillars of The Salon Workshop are in place, once a month I will be expanding the workshop and focusing on one aspect of life, love or housekeeping, so that over the year we will dig deep and discover who we are, what feeds us and means of coping with and thriving within all that domesticity throws at us through my own writing, inspirational resources and your own monthly audit documenting your progress.
The Salon Blog
In this new Salon Only Blog, I am taking us all back to our roots and writing monthly posts focusing on the work of Sarah Ban Breathnach and how we can use her beautiful, timeless writing to create a lifeless ordinary of our own. Sarah is where Brocantehome began, and in my fifteenth year online I want to celebrate her all over again by truly studying all that she has taught us within the Salon.
The Puttery Treats Calendar
A once a month, day by day guide to seasonal treats and a month less ordinary already in progress in The Salon.
And Finally, a Resource library.
A year full of book suggestions, videos, and all that remains from the previous incarnation of the Salon that still has merit on your journey.
(Learn more about how you can grab the 2018 Salon resources for half-price and lock in that price for ALWAYS at the end of this post!)

Finally, My Newsletters.
Newsletters have never been my forte: I don’t always know what to write and I get all embarrassed about imposing upon your personal space and hounding your inbox too often. (I am the very opposite of a hustle: I’m more of a marketing mouse!). But I have been thinking about the few newsletters I subscribe too and what it is I love about them, and it struck me that the two I like best, (and when I say I like best, I mean I actually arrive in my own inbox in search of them when I know they are due), are those that curate their content and the titbits from around the web they find interesting so I can see the world from their point of view in one lovely, predictably timed package.
So from the beginning of January that is what I will be sending: a short curated collection of thoughts, links and ideas at the same time each week so you can learn a little bit more about what feeds my soul and I believe will feed yours on our journey together. No dillying. No dallying.
Should that float your boat, you can sign up here…
That’s it then, the last of the plans I have made for 2019 in this series of Fifteenth Year Celebrations. Things may remain quiet here as I work diligently behind the scenes to make all this happen but rest assured I will be popping in and out here and you are always free to talk to me in The Living Room.
Should you want to take advantage of my Fifteenth birthday celebrations, all the details are below and it remains only for me to say thank you so much for reading to the very end of this extra long post. I hope it has clarified exactly where I want to go with Brocantehome and I truly hope you will join me on the journey towards a life less ordinary.
Here’s to another fifteen years together!
Ok so most of my older products are for the next few weeks available on a Pay What You Want basis in my dedicated Sales Room and there is 50% off all Salon Subscriptions using the links below.
Pay What You Want is something I have done for the past few years as I have long been dedicated to sharing my work with as many women who want it as possible. Not all of the products I want to include are there yet and I will be adding more as the weeks go by. But do please use Pay What You Want honorably and truly pay what you can afford: in this way we help those who truly cannot afford to pay more than the bare minimum and I can afford to keep on offering this annually as a gift to all.
The pricing for the Salon is something I think I have got wrong and I want to address that as soon as possible, so in the short term the 50% will also apply to that too (If you are an existing member instructions for getting the reduced price will be sent to you so please hangfire, I promise I won’t let you pay any more than you need to! You simply need to cancel your existing subscription and buy the new one: go into your account in the Salon to cancel.) and I will be releasing more and more details of what will be included in the Salon 2019, over the coming weeks.
So that means you can use the coupon code “2019” to pay (and lock in for a lifetime!) the following prices:
The monthly subscription would go from $29.00 to $14.50. (Click here to pay monthly!)
The annual subscription would go from $299.00 to $149.50 (Click here to pay annually!)
And the LIFETIME membership will go from $399.00 to $199.50 – which means you would never again pay me a penny for your Salon subscription and trust me, The Salon is here to stay! ( Click here to pay for a lifetime subscription!)
These prices are not forever. In line with good membership practice, I am banishing both the annual and the lifetime subscription charges at the end of the year in favor of a flat monthly rate of $20.00. For the sake of accounting ease and fair play to all. While I have said this before and quickly lost my nerve (I am the most awful ditherer!), this time I will be sticking to my decision, so if you want to pay annually, and get the savings included, now is the time!
