Are you like ME? Do you yearn for a life less ordinary within the pretty sanctuary of a home you love to bits? Are you at your happiest when you are sitting wrapped in your favorite quilt with a cup of tea in your hand and a new stack of library books at your side? Are you putting your heart and soul into creating a home that nurtures your family and gives your most creative self a voice…?

Then YES you are like me (yay!), so I know that sometimes life within your own four walls feels overwhelming. I know that sometimes it feels like all work, no play and very little reward and I know that all too often it feels as though we are sacrificing our most essential selves, our most creative selves to all the demands domesticity makes upon us…

I know because once upon a time I felt like that too.

But not any more. For now, even when life is totally topsy-turvy, my home remains my sanctuary and my days are defined by the routines, rituals and teeny celebrations I created to make sure that wherever I lived, my house would always feel like a scrumptiously pretty springboard for my soul, and would never again become the chaotic, exhausting prison it once threatened to be…

You see domesticity doesn’t have to be dull.

It doesn’t have to be the chains that bind you to a life of drudgery. It really doesn’t. In fact home can be so much more than just the four walls that shelter you from the rest of the world. It can be your studio. Your workplace. A home for your soul. It can (and should) be your sanctuary. Your salon and your boudoir…

And I have got all the routines, rituals, puttery treats and rather bossy advice you need to make your own home, however imperfect or temporary it maybe, into all of these things and so much more.

You CAN live a life less ordinary but are you REALLY ready?

  • Ready to dream big, fat, beautiful domestic dreams and  willing to channel your whole self into making them happen?
  • Ready to spend time and bundles of energy on learning how to create the kinds of routines and rituals that will have your very own Muse doing a happy little polka?
  • And above all else truly committed to making it happen? Because this I know for sure: home wasn’t built in a day…

If you can answer YES to all these questions, then Darling you have come to the right place. Simply set aside ten minutes a day to check in here at BrocanteHome and day by day I will teach you to anchor your days with routine, lift your spirits with ritual, and celebrate the teeniest of victories with joy, style and gratitude…

Who Am I?

alison may2

I am Alison May, a frizzy haired writer, 44 year old Mum of one and owner of the craziest Cockapoo in the land. You can read more about me here. I read constantly. Eat too much cheese. Live Clean. And contrary to popular belief I don’t love housework. I really don’t. I am simply a former interior designer who came to understand that a house does not make a home but that when we do it well, keeping house the Brocante way liberates our creativity, and gives us the freedom to say goodbye to exhaustion and resentment.

I want that for you. And I KNOW I can help you achieve it.

I know because in the twelve years BrocanteHome has been online I have not only created an entire generation of Vintage Housekeepers, (a term I coined when I created my first circle of women keeping house the Brocante way) but I have also helped countless women create domestic freedom and enjoy lives less ordinary and every day I receive emails and letters telling me how grateful they are to have finally found their spiritual domestic home. So glad to found someone who can help do more than insist they wear an apron, or tie their housekeeping shoes on, and will instead remind them that keeping house is about more than stain removal and dust bunnies…

The Kindle Books

 1. The very best place to start is probably with my Kindle books. They range in price from 0.99 to 2.99, and thus they are the most inexpensive way to truly immerse yourself in the Brocante way of life. You can read them in any order at all, but to kickstart your Brocante way of life, the following order is what I would recommend…

The Blog

2. Next up, might I recommend that you browse the blog archives? I have been writing at BrocanteHome for twelve years now and there are over 2500 posts, telling my story, describing the ebb and flow of my days, offering hints, tips, routines and rituals and celebrating all that is lovely about the BrocanteHome way of life…

My content is divided in to six sections and you can pick and choose which aspect of a life less ordinary you would like to start with…

  • Sanctuary. A place where you will find all things pertaining to loving your home, keeping house and creating the kind of routines, rituals and celebrations that will help you create a life less ordinary…
  • Authenticity. The category in which I have gathered my most personal, authentic writing. If you are looking for my story (and oh what a story it is!), you will find it in this section.  My morning pages, thoughts, and longer essays on what it is to live the Brocante way in the midst of an oh so real life is all here…
  • Well-being. This category is dedicated to keeping an eye on our most essential selves: little tiny somethings we can do to simply feel better as part of the rituals and routines we adhere to as part of the BrocanteHome way of life. In it you will find my own life audits, as well as personal puttery treats, reminders to live well and little somethings you can buy to fill up your comfort drawer and enrich your daily routines…
  • Bibliotherapy. In this section you will find book recommendations, quotes, poetry, and thoughts on reading, all with a deliciously domestic slant and all designed to remind you that reading feeds our mind, enriches our souls and inspires us to commit to creating a better way of life for ourselves and our family.
  • Creativity. This category is a delicious muddle of inspirational women, thoughts on working from home, arty snippets, recommended courses and tools for blogging that will help you as you set out on your very own creative journey.
  • And finally the Noticeboard. A place for all general site notifications  and thoughts about where BrocanteHome is heading as the years go by.
The PDF's and Downloads
